The project explores figure to figure relationships and their deformations caused by dynamic windforces. It rigorously addresses the context of the site, Cres/Croatia, by nesting the volumes in linearproduction system and orientation dependent on existing winds which are the parameter of constantmutability and transformation of the shapes. Volumetric continuity achieved by multi materiality, surfacecreasing, seams and structure porosity is defining the complexity of sustainable architectural processesincorporated within the building.City of CRES on Island Cres, is a historical Mediterranean town with Venetian architecture and urbanstructure. The dens typology of the urban matrix is a direct response to the environmental influencestypical for this region. Small and narrow streets and houses with thick walls and small windows organizedin maze are designed to cool down the premises in the summer and protect them from strongwinds in winter. Cres has a marina nearby, which has recently been awarded the blueflag status, with many boats in it. Also, situated directly in city centre, there is an existing boat yardsitting on large area, which does not correspond to historical heritage of the context. Thus, the projectaddresses this problem by designing the new factory with sustainable properties and integratedprogram within the tourist centre of Cres. The typical typology of the boat factory is open plan space which allows easy circulation and flexibility. However the large and homogenise roof structure is creating a problem of being unrelated to urbanfabric of small and dens houses. The solution is a division in smaller functional units with variousprogram that are interconnecting, interweaving and volumetrically relating to one another by allowingthe urban labyrinth of small streets to continuously flow inside the factory ground. In this fashion, theboat yard is becoming more public (as it is usually open for visitors) and the border between the citycentre and the factory is blurred. The program (18800m2) is organized in two main segments (Hull fabrication oriented towards the waterand Sails fabrication facing the city centre) plus the showrooms for yacht exhibitions. The circulation is non-linear for both employees and the public which means they can freely circulateover the whole site (inside within the building for workers or outside between the volumes or on top ofthem for public), while the flow of the production process is linear because of gentries and efficientproductivity. There are two main local winds, Bora and Sirocco. Bora is strongest and coldest wind blowing from landtowards the sea while Sirocco is warm wind coming from the sea toward the land. In this project theirinfluence is used for running a natural ventilation, as well as for optimizing the geometry of the volumesto create most suitable conditions for the site and program. Several prototypical models were generatedand ran through CFX simulations in order to calculate the best states of two volumes being in certainrelationship. Later on the results were implemented on the building geometryThe approach towards the structure of the building as well as the materiality is the same as the oneused in process of boat fabrication. The building is composed out of components that are common inhull and sail design. There is a primary steel structure with secondary roof construction that providesmultiple functions such as installation and shading. On top of all there are carbon fiber panels (build onsite in same fashion as hulls) that are behaving as protection skin. The gradient between transparentand opaque roof structure has a double function for air intakes/disposals and smooth transition fromsolid surface and porous shading structure of the courtyard. The final outcome is a heterogeneous mass nested between historical context and beautiful waterfrontthat merges functionality of the form with the natural conditions which shaped the local area for centuries. It is a green factory of the future with realization possibilities of today....
